ALETHIA self-titled debut album is a fascinating journey through Latin-Soul music, combing her Colombian heritage with her life in Naarm, Australia.
The album is comprised of four acts, exploring different genres and stories as it progresses. Roots is the first chapter, with birdsong, melodic acoustic riffs and windlike instrumentals, ‘Almita mia’ begins the story. written for her mother, the opening track expresses the purpose she found through her family. ‘De Tu Mano’ follow, a gentle, folksy tune with steel guitar and layered vocals that create a heavenly, dreamy tone. The act concludes with ‘Mondero’, an indie-infused track with electric guitar and heavy beating dreams support ALETHIA’s angelic voice.
Nostalgia is the second act, starting with ‘To You’ a song that marries suspenseful guitar riffs with pounding drums and electronic beats. ‘Utopia’ lightens the mood with horns, keys and light, lilting vocals which create the sense of an intimate conversation. The closing song of act two is ‘Once More’, a bonus track that creates the images of a jazz singer dreaming of stardom, symbolising new beginnings and breaking away from old constraints.
The penultimate act is Love, comprising of two songs, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and ‘Physical Form’. Both showcasing a more electronic side to the album with a Drum & Bass influence which is an ode to physical love and expression through physical connection.
Hope is the final act, closing the album with two reflective and slow songs. ‘Falling’ features slow guitar jams and wistful vocals, mirroring the universe’s ebb and flow. Finally, ‘Oh Darling’ showcases ALETHIA’s incredible range and emotional depth, reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s ethereal sound.
In ALETHIA’s own words, “We are all like butterflies emerging from cocoons,” and this album beautifully captures that metamorphosis, inviting listeners to join her on a journey of self-discovery and connection.
